Herders for a Reason!
Herding dogs come in many sizes and types.
For our use, the German Shepherd, Bouvier des Flandres, and Border Collie work fine around
here. I use the larger breeds for K-9 personal and estate protection, and when I train with the DELMARVA WORKING
DOG GROUP on Sunday morning. I haven't found too many Border Collies which can do this sport! Now to be fair to the
Border Collie...NOTHING is better for moving and controlling livestock than this breed.
Border Collie Split has been my main worker for Katahdin Hair sheep. She has also been
very successful in controlling the Snow and Canada goose populations which drop by for a free winter wheat feeding. The
Border Collie has the "eye" and speed to cut and run down sheep and those free ranging geese. As a shepherd's
tool, I know of no other breed which will save me time in the pasture.
Our Herding Dogs, A Closer Look!
Bouvier
des Flandres: Frock v.d. Barbierhoeve (Rock) is my Belgium imported male. He's AKC and AKC-DNA registered. I
also have Liberty's Bear, a female, which is AKC registered and has her AKC-CGC certificate.
Border Collie: Border Collie Split is registered with the American Border Collie Association,
ABCA. She is from my first breeding, a real solid worker, and daddy's girl. She "represents" around here at
400 pounds, rather than her true weight of 38 pounds!
German
Shepherd: Our newest puppy is Yaga. She's from Patty Calloway's breeding of: Lil Yago Polizei of McDaniel
and Sonja Wildwoman Blue Von Sturm.
